when fggts scream
by Maitiú Mac Cárthaigh Archive Not Availablewhen fggts scream is an ongoing body of work about the Queer rural experience with specific focus on isolation and loneliness. What is central to this is the idea of betrayal. By this I mean how looking back at Irish Queer history we can see a distinct move towards assimilation, normalisation and financialisation of Queer identity.
What I have put together for this show is a soundscape of different voices singing, humming and screaming. The starting point for these recordings is the tradition of Keening but over time is now more aligned with Zeynep Bulut’s ideas of voicing. While making the recordings, each of the participants mentioned how cathartic the exercises felt, and I link this back to Anne Carson’s writings on the gender of the voice and questioning of who has the right to be heard. Mixed in are some fictional pieces I am working on that are written through a country boys make do methodology when it comes to sex, stability and re-ruralisation or counter-urbanisation.
