Today’s DOOMSDAY special edition commemorates Daniel Dumile, AKA MF DOOM, Viktor Vaughn and King Geedorah, who died on 31 October 2020.

Known for his mischievous personas, unique flow, rhymes and beat making, obscure taped clips from TV, not to mention some epic collaborations with likes of Madlib, Dangermouse, and Czarface, among many others, he left an unmistakable imprint on global hiphop.

Dumile’s career was marked by tragedy, with the death of his brother and fellow KMD member in his early career, then losing his son of 14 just a few years before his own passing. I think this was a powerful influence on retreat from hiphop in the late 90s-early 2000s, then reinvention as MF DOOM . Much like the comic character himself, he suffered a personal tragedy and reemerged as an evil character to terrorise the world’s population. In DOOM’s case, he terrorised the hiphop community with a style and flow unmatched during his pomp.

Among all his qualities, it is the rogue nature that I always loved about DOOM’’s various alter egos. It comes out in his rhymes and story telling, sometimes a sinister baddie, other times a bumbling, shady dude you’d run into on the street. As an underground icon he played this up - to the degree that I’ve heard stories of him sending an imposter to play his shows during the height of his popularity. And while I think I’d be pretty gutted if I was one of those punters.. you also gotta love the mythology of it all..
